MUMBAI – The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali fell 3% on month in December, while the cost of a non-vegetarian thali rose at the same rate, CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics division said in a release Monday. The price of a vegetarian meal in December was INR 31.6, while that of a non-vegetarian meal was INR 63.3, it said.

The cost of the vegetable thali fell largely due to a 12?ll in tomato and onion prices, and a 2% drop in potato prices. Fresh supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat weighed on tomato prices, according to the report. On the other hand, cost of the non-vegetarian thali grew due to an estimated 11% on-month increase in prices of broiler chicken following a dip in production triggered by a cold wave in the north, it said. This, coupled with a rise in festival and wedding-season demand, along with an elevated feed cost, exacerbated the woes, the report said.

On a yearly basis, the cost of a vegetarian thali rose 6% while that of a non-vegetarian thali rose 12%, the CRISIL division said. A 24% rise in tomato prices to INR 47 per kg in December from INR 38 per kg last year, contributed to the increase in the cost of the vegetarian meal. Further, potato prices surged 50% on a low base of last year to INR 36 per kg in December due to an estimated 6% on-year decline in production, the report said. Adding to the cost was a 16% on-year jump in vegetable oil prices due to an import-duty hike, coupled with higher demand during the festival and wedding seasons, it said.

However, an 11% on-year drop in fuel cost to INR 803 per 14.2 kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas in Delhi from INR 903 last year provided a partial relief, according to CRISIL.

The increase in non-vegetarian thali cost was driven by an estimated 20% on-year rise in the price of broiler chicken, which accounts for around 50% of a non-vegetarian thali cost. The sharp surge in broiler prices is attributable to a low base of last year, when production was high, CRISIL said.

A veg thali comprises roti, vegetables such as onion, tomato and potato, rice, dal, curd and salad. A non-veg thali has the same elements except for dal, which is replaced by chicken. The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India, the report said. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common person's expenditure, it added.  End
