NEW DELHI – Patna police on Monday arrested Jan Suraaj Party Founder Prashant Kishor who had been on an indefinite hunger strike in support of the demands of Bihar Public Service Commission's aspirants. The aspirants have been demanding the cancellation of the preliminary exam held on Dec. 13. The police alleged Kishor was illegally protesting at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.
"We had served them notice that they have been protesting at a prohibited site. However, they didn't abide by the orders following which a case was registered at Gandhi Maidan Police Station. We gave them ample time to vacate the spot, but they didn't agree, following which he (Prashant Kishor) was arrested around 0600 IST," Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh told the media.
Kishor started a hunger strike on Thursday in support of the demands of Bihar Public Service Commission's aspirants. "My demands include cancellation of the exam and holding fresh tests," Kishor told the media. Hundreds of students have been protesting in Patna against the alleged irregularities in the Bihar Public Service Commission preliminary examination and are demanding a retest. The students have alleged that CCTVs and jammers had not been functional at several examination centres and that question papers had been distributed late at some locations. On Dec. 30, Kishore had given a 48-hour ultimatum to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to resolve the matter and cancel the exam.
Besides Kishor, around 43 others were also detained, and 15 vehicles were seized on Monday, Singh said. "The verification process is underway. Only five of the detainees are from Patna and all are workers of a particular party. Some of them claimed to be students. However, 30 out of the 43 are not students and verification of the rest is being done," he added.
