NEW DELHI – Ahead of the elections for Delhi Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated 1,675 flats for slum dwellers in Ashok Vihar and several other development projects in Delhi and attacked the Aam Aadmi Party-led government for allegedly pushing the capital towards "disaster".
"For the past 10 years, Delhi has been caught in a major 'aapda' (disaster). Using Anna Hazare ji's name, some extremely corrupt individuals have pushed Delhi into this 'aapda'. Everything is riddled with scams. They openly indulge in corruption. This AAP, this 'aapda' has descended upon Delhi, and that's why the people of Delhi have launched a battle against this disaster," Modi said.
Modi also took a swipe at former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal over the controversy surrounding the chief minister's residence. "I could also have built a "Sheesh Mahal" for myself, but my only dream was to build "pucca" houses for my fellow countrymen," Modi said, addressing people at Ashok Vihar.
The prime minister said that over 40 million houses have been built for the poor in the last 10 years in the country.
He also attacked the AAP government over the education system in Delhi. While the AAP government has always hailed Delhi's education system and called it world-class, Modi alleged that the Delhi government has caused huge damage to education in 10 years and also failed to spend even half of Samagra Shiksha funds allocated by the central government. The Samagra Shiksha scheme is an integrated scheme for school education, covering the entire gamut from pre-school to class XII. The scheme aims to ensure that all children have access to quality education with an equitable and inclusive classroom environment which should take care of their diverse background, multilingual needs, different academic abilities and make them active participants in the learning process.
He also criticised the AAP government for not implementing the Centre's Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides health cover of INR 500,000 per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. The Delhi High Court has also issued a notice to the Delhi government on a public interest litigation seeking the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
In the wake of the upcoming assembly polls, Kejriwal has also announced several welfare schemes for senior citizens, backward classes, women and priests. The AAP is seeking a third term in Delhi.
The election for the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly is likely to be held in February. The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the election dates. The previous assembly election in the national capital was held on Feb. 8, 2020. The AAP had won 62 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party, eight.
Modi also said the New Year brings numerous new possibilities for India's economic growth. The journey towards becoming one of the world's top three economic powers will accelerate this year, he said. "Today, India has become a symbol of political and economic stability globally," Modi said.
"India will become a manufacturing hub. The year 2025 will be a year for enhancing ease of living, quality of life and women-led development in the country. In 2025, the country will become a major manufacturing hub in the world," he said. End
