IMD sees heavy rainfall, snow over western Himalayan region during weekend

MUMBAI – Heavy rainfall and snow are very likely over parts of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad during the weekend, caused by a western disturbance over parts of Iran, the India Meteorological Department said on Friday. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also likely over parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Sunday and Monday, it said.
The minimum temperatures were below 0 degrees Celsius in many parts of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, 6-11 degrees Celsius in many parts of northwest India, 9-14 degrees Celsius in many parts of central and east India and 15-20 degrees Celsius in many parts of west India. Today, the lowest minimum temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius was reported at Nowgong in east Madhya Pradesh over the plains of the country, the weather department said.
Very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail during late night and early morning hours in some pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, the Met department said. A gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius is likely over northwest India during the next four days and fall thereafter by 2-4 degrees Celsius. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over central India during the next five days, the weather agency said. Cold wave conditions are very likely in some pockets of Telangana and north interior Karnataka till Saturday, it said. End
