MUMBAI - Mills in the country produced 9.54 million tonnes of sugar from Oct 1 to Dec 31, down 15.6% on year, the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association said in a press release Thursday. A total of 493 mills were operational across the country as of Dec 31, down from 512 a year ago, the association said.

According to the industry body, mills in Maharashtra--the top manufacturer of the commodity--produced 3.0 million tonnes of sugar, compared with 3.82 million tonnes a year ago. The output of mills in the second-largest producer, Uttar Pradesh, was 3.3 million tonnes, down 4.5% from a year ago. Production by mills in Karnataka fell to 2.04 million tonnes from 2.49 million tonnes a year ago.

In the current sugar season, factories in Maharashtra and Karnataka started operations in November, much later compared to last year.

During Oct. 1-Dec. 31, sugar production in Tamil Nadu fell nearly 65% to 90,000 tonnes and the output in Gujarat was down 23% at 285,000 tonnes. Mills across other states produced 845,000 tonnes of sugar as of Tuesday, down from 928,000 tonnes a year ago. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh are the other sugar-producing states.

For 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), India's gross sugar production is estimated at 33.3 million tonnes, down 2.3% from 34.1 million tonnes the previous year, according to ISMA's first advance estimates. In July, the association had pegged gross sugar output for 2024-25 at 33.3 million tonnes. Gross sugar output is estimated before sucrose diversion for ethanol making. The association will come out with its second advanced estimate of sugar production at the end of January, according to the release.

The association has estimated sugar diversion for ethanol at 4.0 million tonnes in the ongoing ethanol supply year started November. In 2023-24, the government had restricted ethanol production from sugarcane by-products at a little over 2 million tonnes amid concern about lower production of the sweetener.

ISMA has estimated domestic consumption of the sweetener during the remaining eight months of the season at around 2.35 million tonnes. It noted that the domestic sales quota for the first four months of this sugar year was 700,000 tonnes lower compared to the same period last year. Total domestic consumption for the 2024-25 sugar season is projected lower, at around 28.0 million tonnes.

With 4 million tonnes diverted for ethanol from the gross sugar output of 33.3 million, the net sugar output in 2024-25 is likely to be 29.3 million tonnes. In 2023-24, the net sugar output was nearly 32 million tonnes. In 2024-25, ISMA sees comfortable availability of sugar not only for domestic consumption and the ethanol blending programme, but also for sugar exports, ISMA said earlier in a release.  End
