IMD sees heavy rain or snow, thunderstorms over north India on Sun, Mon

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said heavy rainfall or snowfall, along with isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning is likely over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Balistan, and Muzaffarabad on Sunday and Monday under the influence of several weather systems. 

 

The weather systems include a western disturbance, as a cyclonic circulation lying over Jammu and Pakistan, and another western disturbance, as a cyclonic circulation, lying over Iran in the lower and middle tropospheric level. There are chances for an induced cyclonic circulation to form over Punjab and its neighbourhood on Sunday. In addition, moisture feeding from the Arabian Sea to northwest India is also likely from Sunday to Tuesday, IMD said.

 

Under the influence of the weather systems, light to fairly widespread rainfall or snowfall over parts of the western Himalayan region till Monday, the agency said. Light isolated to scattered rainfall is also likely over the plains of northwest India, the weather agency said.

 

Dense fog conditions are likely to prevail during the late night and early morning hours over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, sub-Himalayan west Bengal, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura till Monday, the agency said.

 

The weather bureau predicted cold day conditions over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

 

Minimum temperatures could gradually rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over northwest India during the next five days, IMD said. Minimum temperatures over Maharashtra could fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next two days, with no significant change thereafter. 

 

No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over central and east India in the next three days, after which a gradual rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius is seen, the department said. No significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over Gujarat in the next five days.  End
