Ashok Leyland's domestic CV sales grow 4% in Dec, first time in 7 months

MUMBAI – Higher truck despatches in December boosted the overall sales of commercial vehicle-maker Ashok Leyland Ltd. However, its bus sales contracted, it said in an exchange filing on Thursday. Domestic sales by Ashok Leyland grew for the first time in seven months, increasing 3.7% in December to 15,713 units. Shares of the company reacted positively to its auto sales disclosure and traded at INR 227.54, up 2.1%, on the National Stock Exchange at 0955 IST.


The overall despatches by Ashok Leyland in December were 16,957 units, including exports, up 5% on year. In November, the company's overall sales growth remained flat after falling for five consecutive months. Nomura had expected the company to dispatch 16,500 units in December.

 

The company's truck sales rose 11% on year to 9,238 units, of which 8,979 units were sold domestically, marking a 9% growth on year. While the truck segment posted a strong performance, the company's India bus sales faltered, causing a contraction in its overall December bus despatches. Ashok Leyland sold 2,236 medium and heavy-rated buses in December, down 3% on year. In India, it sold 1,509 buses, down 12% on year.

 

The company sold 5,483 light commercial vehicles, including exports, down nearly 1% on year. Domestic sales of light commercial vehicles were flat on year at 5,225 units, the company said. The company's overall sales in Apr-Dec fell 2% on year to 135,921 units. In Apr-Dec, the company's total sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles fell 1.7% to 86,123 units and total sales of light commercial vehicles fell 1.7% on year to 49,798 units, the company said. 

 

Ashok Leyland reported a net profit of INR 7.70 billion for the September quarter on revenue of INR 87.69 billion.  End
