MUMBAI – Tata Motors Ltd.'s total vehicle sales in December were 78,164 units, flat against the year-ago period, as a marginal decline in commercial vehicle despatches offset the benefit of the slight increase in passenger vehicle volume. During the month, the automaker sold a total of 76,599 units in India, against 76,138 units in the year-ago period. However, its exports declined 9% on year to 1,565 units.
In December, the Tata Group company sold a total of 44,289 passenger vehicles, up 1% from the year-ago period. In India, it sold 44,230 units, marking an increase of 2% on year, but its exports fell to 59 units from 205 units in the same period last year. In the electric passenger vehicle segment, the company recorded total sales of 5,562 units during the month, up 11% on year.
Nomura Research had projected Tata Motors passenger vehicle wholesales to fall by 13% on year to 38,000 units in December, and Nuvama Institutional Equities has pencilled in a decline of 6% on year for the segment.
In the commercial vehicle category, the automaker recorded sales of 33,875 units in December, down 1% on year. Its domestic sales fell 1% on year to 32,369 units, and exports were flat on year at 1,506 units. During the month, the company's despatches of heavy trucks fell 15% on year to 9,520 units, and those of intermediate, light and medium trucks were flat on year at 5,687 units. Nomura expected the automaker's medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales to decline by 3% on year to 16,400 units, while light commercial vehicle wholesales were seen down by 11% on year to 14,000 units.
In December, Tata Motors sales of passenger carriers surged by 35% on year to 4,144 units, and despatches of small commercial vehicles rose 2% on year to 13,018 units. Nearly 53% of Tata Motors' commercial vehicle sales came from these two segments in December.
OCT-DEC
In the Oct-Dec period, Tata Motors sold a total of 235,599 vehicles, up from 234,981 units in the year-ago quarter. Its total commercial vehicle sales fell 1% on year to 95,770 units, while total passenger vehicle sales came in at 139,829 units, up 1% on year.
In the commercial vehicle category, the decline in heavy and small commercial vehicle sales in Oct-Dec weighed on overall segment sales for the quarter. The small commercial vehicle despatches were impacted due to ongoing financing challenges faced by first-time users and rental customers in this category, said Girish Wagh, executive director of Tata Motors.
"Propelled by a resurgence in construction and mining activities post-monsoon, plus the festive season demand, HCV (heavy commercial vehicle) segment witnessed robust quarter-on-quarter growth in sales during Q3 FY25, even as the YoY (year-on-year) sales declined 9% due to limited growth in end-use segments," said Wagh. "The intermediate, light and medium commercial vehicle segment witnessed 3% YoY growth, driven by strong demand...the Passenger Carrier segment witnessed a 30% YoY sales growth in Q3 FY25, with healthy demand from State Transport Undertakings and the Staff/Tour & Travel segments," he said.
"Looking ahead, we expect demand to improve in Q4 FY25 across most segments of the CV industry. The key aspects to watch out in 2025 will be the government's focus on infrastructure spend, and growth in end-use segments, which will augur well for the commercial vehicles industry," Wagh said.
On the outlook for passenger vehicle sales in 2025, Tata Motors remains optimistic. "With multiple product launches, innovations and a strengthened multi-powertrain strategy, Tata Motors is well poised for further growth in CY2025," said Shailesh Chandra, managing director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd.
For Jul-Sept, Tata Motors earned a consolidated net profit of INR 33.43 billion on a top line of INR 1.01 tln. On Wednesday, shares of Tata Motors closed 1.2% higher at INR 749.25 on the National Stock Exchange. End
