RBI says just INR 66.91 bln worth of INR 2,000 banknotes left in circulation

NEW DELHI – The total value of INR 2,000 banknotes in circulation has declined to INR 66.91 billion as of Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of India said in a release on Wednesday. When the central bank announced the withdrawal of the INR 2,000 banknotes on May 19, 2023, the total value of these notes in circulation was INR 3.56 trillion.
The RBI has received 98.12% of INR 2,000 notes in use as of Tuesday. The regulator gives periodic updates on the status of withdrawal of the notes. The banknotes could be deposited or exchanged at bank branches till Oct 7, 2023. Now, the facility is only open at the RBI's 19 issue offices nationwide. The 2,000-rupee notes continue to be legal tender, the RBI said. End
