MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. on Wednesday reported robust year-on-year growth in total sales for December as most segments exhibited strong growth in despatches. India's largest passenger vehicle maker despatched a total of 178,248 units in December, up 30% from 137,551 units in the year-ago period, but lower than 181,531 units sold in November, according to an exchange filing by the company.

In December, the automaker's total domestic passenger vehicle sales came in at 130,117 units, up 24% on year, and its exports surged 39% on year to 37,419 units. Nomura Research had expected Maruti Suzuki's passenger vehicle wholesale volumes in India to rise 24% on year to 130,000 units in December, while exports were projected to rise 12% to 30,000 units.

The heavy discounts offered by the company across its product portfolio in the year-end period may have helped it counter the post-festival season slowdown in demand, according to analysts. Further, the company also announced a price hike of up to 4?ross its portfolio from January to offset the impact of rising input costs and operational expenses.

In the utility vehicles category, Maruti Suzuki sold 55,651 units in India, up 21% on year. This is the lowest utility vehicle sales recorded by the company in a month since June. It currently offers models such as Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Fronx, Invicto and Jimny in the utility vehicle category. In the passenger car category, which includes mini, compact, and mid-size sub-segments, Maruti Suzuki sold 62,788 units in India last month, registering growth of 29% from the year-ago period. The company recorded growth in sales of passenger cars after a year, albeit on a low base. In December 2023, it had reported an on-year decline of 29% in passenger car sales.

In December, the automaker sold a total of 7,418 mini-cars in India, up nearly threefold from a year ago. Sales of compact cars rose 20% on year to 54,906 units, but sales of mid-size vehicles fell 5% on year to 464 units. In the mini, compact and mid-size categories, Maruti Suzuki offers models such as WagonR, Baleno, Swift, Alto, S-Presso and Ciaz.

In the light commercial vehicle category, the company sold 2,406 units in December, up 40% on year. Its sales to other original equipment manufacturers came in at 8,306 units, up nearly twofold on year.

Cumulatively, for Apr-Dec, Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 1.63 million units, up 5% on year. Sales in the first nine months of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) were driven by higher despatches of utility vehicles, vans, and exports. During the period, the company sold 528,963 utility vehicles in India, up 15% on year, and 102,520 vans, up 2% on year. Sales to other original equipment makers jumped a massive 88% on year to 81,199 units, and its overall exports rose 21% on year to 247,496 units.

For Jul-Sept, Maruti Suzuki earned a net profit of INR 30.69 billion on a top line of INR 372.03 billion. At 1515 IST, shares of the automaker were at INR 11,188.55 on the National Stock Exchange, up 3%.  End
