India Apr-Nov major subsidies spending rises 15% to INR 2.79 tln

NEW DELHI – The government's expenditure on major subsidies in Apr-Nov rose 15% on year to INR 2.792 trillion, data from the Controller General of Accounts showed. The expenditure accounted for 73% of the Budget estimate of INR 3.812 trillion for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), compared with 65% in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

 

The food subsidy bill rose sharply by 32.7% to INR 1.518 trillion in Apr-Nov, which accounted for 74% of the allocation for the year. In Apr-Nov 2023, the government utilised 58% of the allocation. The FY25 Budget estimate of INR 2.053 trillion for food subsidies is 3% lower than the revised estimate as well as the actual spending last year. 

 

The government's spending on petroleum subsidies increased over fivefold to INR 60.83 billion in Apr-Nov, and accounted for 51% of the Budget estimate. At INR 119.25 billion, the FY25 Budget estimate for petroleum subsidies is 2.6% lower than the expenditure in the last fiscal year.

 

The expenditure on fertiliser subsidies, on the other hand, fell 4.6% to INR 1.214 trillion in the first eight months of the year. The allocation of INR 1.640 trillion for fertiliser subsidies is lower than the FY24 revised estimate of INR 1.889 trillion.
