Bajaj Auto Dec local sales fall at quickest rate in 17 months, exports shine

MUMBAI – Bajaj Auto Ltd.'s domestic despatches in December fell at the fastest rate in nearly 17 months to 162,420 units, down 15% on year. At 1005 IST, shares of the two-wheeler maker traded nearly 2% lower at INR 8,625.30 on the National Stock Exchange, following the disclosure of December sales. However, exports by the company increased 18% on year to 160,705 units, the company said in an exchange filing on Tuesday. Its December export growth was lower than the 24% increase it had reported in October and November, each.
Overall sales by the company, inclusive of its three-wheelers, fell to 323,125 in December, a percent lower on year. Nomura Research expected sales of 351,000 units. The Pune-based company sold 272,173 two-wheelers in December, 4% lower than 283,000 units sold a year ago. Local sales of two-wheelers fell 19% on year to 128,335 units, while exports increased 15% on year to 143,838 units, the company said.
In December, Bajaj Auto's commercial vehicle sales increased 16% on year to 50,952 units. Exports by the company shined here as well as it sold 16,867 units overseas in December, registering a 50% on-year increase. In India, the company despatched 34,085 three-wheelers to dealers, at a growth rate of 5%.
YTD PERFORMANCE
In Apr-Dec, Bajaj Auto sold 3.55 million units, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers, up 8% on-year. Domestic sales increased 6% on an annual basis to 2.18 million units while exports were 1.37 million units, up 12% on year.
The company despatched a little over 3 million two-wheelers to dealers in Apr-Dec, up 8% on year. Domestic sales of two-wheelers were up 6% on-year to 1.81 million units while exports gained 11% to 1.23 million units.
During Apr-Dec, Bajaj Auto's commercial vehicle sales were 509,286 units, up 8% on year. Exports increased 21% on year to 142,002 units while locally, Bajaj Auto sold 367,284 units, up 4%.
For Jul-Sept, Bajaj Auto's net profit was INR 20.05 billion against a revenue of INR 131.27 billion. End
