Telangana's Reddy tops list of CMs with most serious criminal cases - report

NEW DELHI – At least 10 chief ministers in the country have declared serious criminal cases against them, including attempt to murder, crime against women, kidnapping, criminal intimidation and bribery, a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms said. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy declared the highest number of serious cases registered against him at 72, including a case under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code for the use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.

 

Reddy was followed by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu with 32 serious cases, including two charges of attempt to murder, the Association for Democratic Reforms data claimed. Tamil Nadu's M.K. Stalin has declared 11 serious cases, while Karnataka's Siddaramaiah has declared six and Jharkhand's Hemant Soren has declared seven serious cases. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Kerala's Pinarayi Vijayan have declared two cases each and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh have declared one case each, the report said.

 

Serious criminal cases pertain to assault, murder, kidnapping, rape and crimes against women and children. "Offences for which the maximum punishment is 5 years or more and if an offence is non-bailable and cognisable come under the criteria of serious cases," the report stated.

 

Out of the 31 chief ministers in the country, there are criminal cases registered against 13 of them, the report said. 

 

According to the report, Chandrababu Naidu is the richest chief minister in the country with assets worth over INR 9.31 billion and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the poorest with assets worth just INR 1.5 million.

 

The report said the average assets of chief ministers is over INR 520 million. It also said the average self-income of the chief ministers is INR 1.3 million, which is 7.3 times more than the average per capita income of the country. The total assets of 31 chief ministers are INR 16.30 billion. End
