Maharashtra sugar ouptut down 24% on year so far, says Sugar Commissionerate

NEW DELHI – Sugar production in Maharashtra, the top producer, has declined 24% on year to 2.9 million tonnes as of Monday in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) from 3.8 million tonnes last year, according to the state's Sugar Commissionerate data. Sugar output has fallen as fewer mills are running this season.
As of Monday, 190 mills were operational in Maharashtra, against 204 last year, the data showed. Meanwhile, the state's sugar recovery rate, or sugar extracted while crushing sugarcane, stands at 8.6%, a tad down from 8.9% last year.
The Kolhapur division produced 796,300 tonnes of sugar, with the highest recovery rate in the state, at 10.13%. Kolhapur has 26 cooperative mills, the highest in the state, and 13 private mills. In Pune division, 31 mills made 736,800 tonnes of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.7%, the data showed.
In Solapur, though 41 mills were operational, it produced only 452,100 tonne sugar as the recovery rate was 7.6%. The 25 mills in Ahmednagar division produced 343,700 tonnes sugar, with an 8% recovery rate.
In Nanded, 28 mills made 337,400 tonnes, with a recovery rate of 8.7%. Other sugar-producing divisions are Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Amravati, and Nagpur.
As of Dec. 15, India produced 6.14 million tonne sugar, down 17% on year from 7.40 million tonnes last year. Barring Uttar Pradesh, all major sugar-producing states—Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat have registered an on-year decline in sugar production.
The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories is likely to detail the all-India sugar production to date on Wednesday. End
