NEW DELHI – Ahead of the assembly elections, Delhi's former chief minister nad Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced that the state government will give an honorarium of INR 18,000 per month to priests in the national capital if the Aam Aadmi Party returns to power. Kejriwal announced the Pujari Granthi Samman Scheme for the temple priests and granthis of gurudwaras (Sikh shrines) in Delhi.

Addressing the media, Kejriwal said the registration process will start on Tuesday. He will go to Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place for registration of priests there and, following that, the AAP workers will start registration in all temples and gurudwaras across the city.

"This is the first of its kind. No government or political party has ever brought such a scheme for priests. No government has ever thought about the welfare of priests. I won't call it salary or payment. It's an honorarium for the priests and granthis. I hope that the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress governments will also launch such schemes in their respective states," Kejriwal said.

"Priests and granthis have been the custodians of our religious customs, serving society selflessly. Unfortunately, no one has ever taken care of their financial well being," he said.

In the wake of the upcoming assembly polls, Kejriwal has been announcing welfare schemes to ensure an absolute majority for the AAP for the third consecutive term in Delhi. He has announced the Sanjivani scheme for senior citizens and Mahila Samman Yojana.

The election for the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly is likely to be held in February. The term of the current assembly ends on Feb. 15. The previous assembly election in the national capital was held on Feb. 8, 2020. The AAP had won 62 seats and the BJP, eight. End
