NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Punjab government to take all measures to ensure the Bhartiya Kisan Union Ekta Sidhupur's President Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast-unto-death since Nov. 26 seeking agricultural reforms, is shifted to a hospital. The apex court asked the state government to file a compliance affidavit regarding the shifting of the leader and listed the case for hearing on Saturday.

The apex court was hearing a contempt petition against Punjab chief secretary for non-compliance of its order to provide medical aid to farmer leader Dallewall. "Somebody's life at stake. You need to take it seriously. Medical aid has to be given and the impression is that you are not following it," said the top court.

The top court said it has serious doubts on the farmers who were creating obstacles to provide Dallewal aid. "Let the state take all measures to ensure that he is given the aid," said the court.

On Dec. 19., the apex court had pulled up the Punjab government for not conducting medical tests on Dallewall. "An over 70-year-old person on hunger strike for the past 21 days and suffering from various ailments, (his) health is alright, how can it be?", the court had asked after the state government lawyer said doctors have certified Dallewal's health was fine.

Earlier this year, several farmers from Punjab began a march towards Delhi pressing various demands, including a legal guarantee on the minimum support price for all crops. In September, the apex court had formed a committee to look into the issues raised by agitating farmers and cautioned them to stay away from political parties and promises that cannot be implemented. The committee will look into the modalities of resolving the issues raised by the agitating farmers, the court had said.  End
