MUMBAI – The water level in 155 key reservoirs in the country fell to 135.404 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 139.392 billion cubic metres on Dec. 19, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 75% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres.
However, the water level as of Thursday was up 24% from a year ago and was 19% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. The normal storage is the average storage for the preceding 10 years.
The total live storage capacity fell in all regions across the country. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.436 billion cubic metres, 69.41% of the total live storage capacity, against 69.35% a year ago.
The water level in the western region was 32.127 billion cubic metres, or 86% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in this region. During the corresponding period last year, the water level was 73% of the total live storage capacity. Further, three of the 50 reservoirs were full and 16 were at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. One reservoir in the western region had water below 40% of the storage capacity.
In the northern region, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in reservoirs was 9.151 billion cubic metres, 46% of the total live storage capacity, against 60% a year ago. In the central region, the water level in reservoirs was 36.855 billion cubic metres, 76% of the total live storage capacity compared with 69% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region fell to 42.835 billion cubic metres, 78% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in this region, the data showed. The water level in this region a year ago was just 41% of the total live storage capacity. In the southern region, three reservoirs were full, and 12 reservoirs had water above 91% of the total storage capacity, the data showed. There were seven reservoirs in the southern region with water at 81-90% and two with the water level below 40% of the storage capacity.
Of the 155 reservoirs, 141 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 14 reported storage at 80% or below the live capacity. Out of these 14 reservoirs, only one had water storage of up to 50% of the normal storage.
Since Oct. 1, the country has received 8% below normal rainfall at 108.9 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
