NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court collegium in a meeting held on Sunday recommended the names of three judicial officers for their appointment as judges in the Rajasthan High Court. Chandra Shekhar Sharma, Pramil Kumar Mathur, and Chandra Prakash Shrimali were approved for appointment as judges in the Rajasthan High Court, said the collegium in a resolution uploaded on the apex court's website.
The collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna suggested the name of advocate Pravin Sheshrao Patil for his appointment as a judge of the Bombay High Court. Further, the collegium approved the proposal for appointment of advocate Praveen Kumar Giri as a judge of the Allahabad High Court. In addition, the collegium, also comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant, recommended the name of judicial officer Ashish Naithani as a judge of the Uttrakhand High Court.
Last month, the government had told Rajya Sabha that there were more than 5,600 vacancies in the judiciary from lower courts to the Supreme Court. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union minister of state (independent charge) of the Ministry of Law and Justice, had said there were 364 vacancies in high courts of various states.
"While every effort is made to fill up the existing vacancies expeditiously, vacancies of judges in high courts do keep on rising on account of retirement, resignation or elevation, and also due to increase in the strength of judges," Meghwal had said. Filling up of vacant positions in the case of district and subordinate courts is the responsibility of the high courts and state governments concerned, he had added. End
