IMD sees thunderstorms, hailstorms over northwest, central India on Friday

MUMBAI – A western disturbance is likely to interact with lower level easterly winds over the central parts of the country on Thursday and is likely to lead to thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat on Friday, and over Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said.
The weather system is also likely to cause scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, central Maharashtra, Marathwada on Friday and over Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, the department said. The weather system could also result in scattered to fairly widespread rainfall or snow over the western Himalayan region on Saturday.
The extratropical storm which originates in the Mediterranean region and brings sudden winter rain to the north-western parts of the Indian subcontinent is known as the western disturbance.
The weather bureau has advised farmers in Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujrat to use hail nets to protect orchards and vegetable plants.
Meanwhile, Wednesday's well-marked low pressure area over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off the south Andhra Pradesh-north Tamil Nadu coasts moved westwards and weakened into a low pressure area over the same region on Thursday, the weather agency said. However, the associated cyclonic circulation persisted over the same area at lower tropospheric levels.
Under its influence, thunderstorms and lightning with heavy rainfall are likely over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, the agency said. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till Friday.
The weather bureau has advised fishermen not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal, the adjoining parts of westcentral Bay of Bengal, and along and off the north Tamil Nadu and the Andhra Pradesh coast on Thursday.
It has issued warnings for cold wave to severe cold wave conditions over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday. Thereafter, cold wave conditions are likely over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Balistan, and Muzaffarabad till Monday.
The weather department has also issued warnings for cold day to severe cold day conditions over parts of Himachal Pradesh and west Rajasthan till Saturday.
Dense fog conditions are likely to prevail during the late night and early morning hours over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, and Rajasthan till Tuesday, the department said.
In the next three days, minimum temperatures in northwest India could rise by about 2 degrees Celsius, after which it could gradually fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius, the weather agency said. Minimum temperatures over east west India could rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next two days, and fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius thereafter.
No significant change in minimum temperature is seen over central India in the next three days, after which it could fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius. No significant change in minimum temperatures is also likely over east India in the next five days, the department said. End
