--RBI: Oct gross FDI inflows $6.54 bln vs $5.98 bln Sept, $8.59 bln yr ago

MUMBAI – Gross foreign direct investment into India in October was at $6.54 billion, up from $5.98 billion in September, data released by the Reserve Bank of India released in the December bulletin showed on Tuesday. However, FDI inflows were down nearly a quarter in October from a year ago.

In October, the net FDI outflows eased to $1.33 billion, from $3.06 billion the previous month, according to RBI data. In October last year, RBI data showed net inflows of $3.81 billion. Total FDI inflows include equity capital, reinvested earnings, and other capital.

Manufacturing, financial services, electricity and other energy, and retail and wholesale trade sectors accounted for more than 60% of the FDI inflows, according to an RBI staff paper in the monthly bulletin. Singapore, Mauritius, the Netherlands, and the US remained the major sources of FDI inflows into India, accounting for more than three-fourths of the flows, according to the paper.

An increase in repatriation and net outward FDI in Apr-Oct pulled down the net FDI to $2.1 billion, from $7.7 billion last year, RBI staff said in a paper in the bulletin. The rising dollar and US Treasury yields have led foreign portfolio investors to remain net sellers in October, the staff paper said. Even in November, portfolio investment outflows amounted to $2.4 billion, down from $11 billion in the previous month.

"Within sectors, oil, gas and consumable fuels, and automobile and auto components recorded the highest equity outflows, while information technology and financial services received the largest inflows during November," the paper said.  End
