MUMBAI – Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema till Wednesday, under the influence of a well-marked low pressure area over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu, according to the India Meteorological Department. This low pressure area is likely to move west-southwestwards and weaken gradually into a low pressure area over the same region during the next 24 hours, it said.
The weather agency has also forecast moderate rainfall and snowfall over parts of the western Himalayan region, and expects light rainfall over parts of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday. Such weather conditions are likely due to the influence of a western disturbance that lies as a cyclonic circulation over Punjab and its neighbourhood in the lower and middle tropospheric levels and an induced cyclonic circulation lying over southeast Rajasthan, IMD said.
Yet, another active western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from Thursday night, the weather bureau said. This is likely to cause scattered rainfall and snowfall over the western Himalayan region on Friday and Saturday, it said. Thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms are also likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on Friday, and over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till Saturday.
Meanwhile, the lowest minimum temperature of 6.5 degrees Celsius was reported at Patiala in Punjab in the plains of the country Tuesday. Minimum temperatures are below normal at (-)1 degree Celsius-3 degree Celsius at a few places in Saurashtra Kutch; in parts of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, and in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, the bureau said.
The department has forecast a fall in minimum temperatures by about 2 degrees Celsius in northwest India during the next two days and a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius thereafter and a rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius in west India during the same period. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over central and eastern India during the next five days, the weather agency said.
In addition, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely in some parts of Himachal Pradesh till Wednesday and in some parts of the state Thursday. Similar weather is also very likely over parts of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till Wednesday, the weather agency said. End
