MUMBAI – Indian airlines carried 14.25 million domestic passengers in November, the highest ever in a month. The domestic air passenger traffic rose 11.9% from a year ago, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Monday showed. The domestic passenger traffic was 13.66 million in October.
Between January and November, domestic airline companies carried 146.40 million passengers, up 5.9% from 138.23 million passengers carried in the same period last year.
In November, the passenger load factor of Interglobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo was 90.3%, sharply higher from 82.3% in October. This key metric sheds light on how effectively an airline is able to use its seating capacity. SNV Aviation Pvt. Ltd.'s Akasa Air fared better, as its passenger load factor was the highest among all domestic airlines in November at 92.6%. The low-cost airline bettered its October performance of 85.7%.
The passenger load factor of Tata group's Air India was at 87.3% in November, up from 80.8% in October. The group's premium offering, Vistara, which flew last on Nov. 11, recorded a passenger load factor of 88% for those 11 days. Effective Nov. 12, Vistara merged with Air India. Former Air India subsidiary Alliance Air recorded a passenger load factor of 74.3% in November, a tad higher than in October.
Private carrier SpiceJet Ltd.'s passenger load factor in November was 87.9%, up from 81.0% in October. FlyBig and Fly91 recorded passenger load factors of 35.6% and 73.8%, respectively.
MARKET SHARE
IndiGo retained the leadership position in the domestic market with a 63.6% in November, 30 basis points higher than a month ago. The low-cost carrier carried 9.07 million passengers in November, higher than 8.64 million in October.
Air India remained second, with a market share of 24.4% in November, higher than 19.4% in October. The market share of Air India also includes that of AIX Connect, which merged with Air India Express in October. For the 11 days it operated as a separate airline, Vistara had a market share of 2.9%. Together, Air India and Vistara carried 3.9 million passengers in November, just a tad higher than the month before.
As of November, Akasa Air had a market share of 4.7%, higher than SpiceJet's 3.1%. Akasa Air carried 674,000 passengers in November, 9.4% higher than in October, while SpiceJet carried 443,000 passengers, 32.2% higher than in October. Alliance Air, Star Air, and Fly91 recorded a market share of 0.7%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively, in November.
On-time performance of Vistara at the Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai airports was 79.3%, the highest among all the domestic players. At these four airports, IndiGo's on-time performance was 74.5%, followed by Akasa Air at 66.4%, SpiceJet at 62.5%, Alliance Air at 58.9%, and Air India at 58.8%. End
