MUMBAI – The loss in wireless subscribers for Indian telecom operators fell to 3.31 million users in October from a loss of 10.11 million users in September, as per data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. added users, while Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd., Vodafone Idea Ltd. and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. lost users in October, the data showed.
Bharti Airtel gained 1.93 million users in October, after having lost 1.43 million users in September. Reliance Jio, India's biggest mobile telecom operator, lost 3.76 million mobile subscribers in October, less than the 7.97 million users lost in September. Vodafone Idea saw its subscriber count fall by 1.98 million in October, more than the 1.55 million lost in September.
The subscriber addition of government-run BSNL fell in October, with the company adding 503,371, less than the 849,206 users added in September and 2.53 million in August. MTNL's user count went down by 2,273 in October, similar to the loss of 2,107 users in September.
For mobile users, the market share of Reliance Jio as of Oct. 31 stood at 39.99%, a touch lower than 40.20% in September. Bharti Airtel's market share increased to 33.50% as of Oct. 31 from 33.24% the previous month. Vodafone Idea's market share was 18.30%, mildly lower than 18.41% in September. Private players continue to dominate India's mobile subscriber market with a 91.78% market share, with BSNL and MTNL together taking up the remaining 8.22%.
Reliance Jio remained India's top broadband service provider, both in the wired and wireless segments, with a subscriber base of 474.81 million, followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea at 287.67 million and 125.43 million, respectively, the TRAI data showed.

ACTIVE SUBSCRIBERS
Total mobile subscribers in India as of Oct. 31 were 1.15 billion. Out of these, around 1.07 million were active subscribers, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
