NEW DELHI – India has strongly protested against the social media remarks by Bangladesh interim government's student advisor Mahfuj Alam, making claims over certain Indian territories and asking India to recognise an uprising against former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina. According to reports, Alam in a social media post had said that certain Indian territories should be part of Bangladesh. He also said that India should recognise the uprising that forced Hasina to resign. Alam later deleted the post.

Addressing the media during the weekly briefing, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said such comments "underline the need for responsibility in public articulation."

"We have registered our strong protest on this issue with the Bangladesh side. We understand that the post being referred to has reportedly been taken down. We would like to remind all concerned to be mindful of their public comments," Jaiswal said. "While India has repeatedly signalled interest in fostering relations with the people and the interim government of Bangladesh, such comments underline the need for responsibility in public articulation."

Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in August by a popular uprising against reservation in government jobs. Sheikh Hasina is now in exile in India. An interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is currently in power in Dhaka.

India and Bangladesh's relations have been strained since the formation of the interim government.  End
