NEW DELHI – The Union government may increase the minimum support price for milling copra and ball copra by INR 420/100 kg and INR 100/100 kg, respectively, according to a source. The copra MSP has been listed in the agenda of the Cabinet committee meeting scheduled at 1800 IST on Friday.

The current minimum support price for milling copra is INR 11,160/100 kg and that for ball copra is INR 12000/100 kg.

The government in December last year approved higher minimum support prices for milling and ball copra for the 2024 season by INR 300 per 100 kg and INR 250 per 100 kg, respectively. The government termed the decision as a progressive step towards ensuring better remunerative returns for the coconut growers and improving their welfare substantively. Milling copra is used to extract oil, while ball/edible copra is consumed as a dry fruit and used for religious purposes. Kerala and Tamil Nadu are major producers of milling copra, whereas ball copra is produced predominantly in Karnataka.
