MUMBAI – The well-marked low pressure area over the westcentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move northwards and concentrate into a depression over the westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department said Friday. It is likely that the depression will then move northeastwards, with the same intensity for the next 24 hours.
The weather bureau said heavy rainfall is anticipated over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Friday. Light rainfall or snowfall is also likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabada from Sunday to Tuesday.
The department has advised fishermen not to venture into the westcentral, southwest, and northwest Bay of Bengal, the Tamil Nadu coast, south Odisha coast, and the Andhra Pradesh coast till Tuesday.
The department said cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Saurashtra, Kutch, Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad for the next five-seven days. A cold wave occurs when temperatures drop 4–6 degrees Celsius below the normal minimum temperature.
The weather department has also issued ground frost warnings for parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya till Tuesday. Ground frost refers to the formation of ice on the ground and over objects when their surface temperatures drop below the freezing point of water.
Minimum temperatures over central India could rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next five days, the weather bureau said. The department does not anticipate any significant change in minimum temperatures over northwest India till Sunday, after which temperatures could gradually fall by 2 degrees Celsius in the subsequent two days.
No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over west India, except Gujarat, till Sunday, and thereafter a gradual rise of 2–4 degrees Celsius during the subsequent two days is expected. In the western region, a rise of 3–4 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures is expected till Friday. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely in Gujarat and East India till Wednesday.
