MUMBAI – The water level in 155 key reservoirs in the country fell to 139.392 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 145.416 billion cubic metres on Dec. 5, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 77% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres.
However, the water level as of Thursday was up 24% from a year ago and 18% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. The normal storage is the average storage for the preceding 10 years.
The total live storage capacity fell in all regions across the country. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.604 billion cubic metres, which was 70.2% of the total live storage capacity, against 70.4% a year ago.
The water level in the western region were 33.043 billion cubic metres, or 88% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in this region. During the same period last year, the water level was 75% of the total live storage capacity.
Further, four of the 50 reservoirs were full and 18 were at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. Two reservoirs in the western region had water below 40% of the storage capacity.
In the northern region, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in reservoirs was 9.752 billion cubic metres, 49% of the total live storage capacity, against 63% a year ago.
In the central region, the water level in reservoirs was 38.037 billion cubic metres, which was 79% of the total live storage capacity compared to 71% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region fell to 43.956 billion cubic metres, 80% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in this region, the data showed. The water level in this region a year ago was just 42% of the total live storage capacity.
In the southern region, four reservoirs were full, and 13 reservoirs had water above 91% of the total storage capacity, the data showed. There were 11 reservoirs in the southern region with water at 81-90% and two with the water level below 40% of the storage capacity.
Of the 155 reservoirs, 143 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 12 reported storage at 80% or below the live capacity. Out of these 12 reservoirs, only one had water storage of up to 50% of the normal storage.
Since Oct. 1, the country has received 8% below normal rainfall at 105.8 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
