MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave warning for several parts of northwest India for this week. It said cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad for the next five-seven days.

A cold wave occurs when temperatures drop by 4–6 degrees Celsius below the normal minimum temperature.

The weather department has also issued ground frost warnings for parts of Himachal Pradesh and east Rajasthan till Saturday. Ground frost refers to the formation of ice on the ground and over objects when their surface temperatures drop below the freezing point of water.

The weather department does not anticipate any significant change in minimum temperatures over the western Himalayan region till Thursday, after which temperatures could gradually fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent two-four days. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over northwest India till Friday, and thereafter a gradual fall of 2-3 degrees Celsius during the subsequent three days is expected.

In the western region, a rise of 3–4 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures is expected in central India and Maharashtra till Friday. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely in Gujarat till Saturday, after which temperatures could rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius during the subsequent two days. In the eastern region, a rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures is expected.

Meanwhile, a well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to lead to heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and north Tamil Nadu till Thursday, the weather agency said.

The weather bureau has advised fishermen not to venture into the south Arabian Sea, the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Mannar, southwest and westcentral Bay of Bengal, the Tamil Nadu coast, and the Andhra Pradesh coast till Friday.  End
