AHMEDABAD - Packaged foods major Nestle India Ltd. has started manufacturing its chocolate wafer brand KitKat at its confectionery facility in Sanand in Gujarat, two persons with direct knowledge of the development told Informist on condition of anonymity. "The company started manufacturing KitKat from Sunday and will have a production capacity of about 12,000 tonnes per annum," said one of the two persons.

Nestle India could not be contacted for comment.

In September, Informist had reported that Nestle India planned to start operations at the confectionery facility in November, around Diwali. The company is likely to export KitKat from its Sanand plant and capitalise on the Christmas season in markets abroad, another person said.

The company operationalised its Sanand plant in late 2021, which helped ramp up its capacity for instant noodles brand Maggi in India. Nestle India further expanded capacity for noodles and operationalised this in mid-2024, making it one of the biggest Maggi-making units in the world.

According to the company's last annual report, the company delivered over 6 bln servings of Maggi and 4.2 bln fingers of KitKat to consumers in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar). India is the largest and second-largest market worldwide for the two brands, respectively, the company said.

The annual report also showed that prepared dishes and cooking aids, which include Maggi, contributed 30.4% to the company's sales in FY24, while confectionery items, which include KitKat, Munch, and Milky Bar, contributed 16.5%. Powdered and liquid beverages, including Nescafe, contributed 12.4%.

Nestle India has nine plants in India. According to several media reports, the company is either investing or has plans to invest nearly 42 bln rupees till 2025 to expand its capacity in India.

At 1225 IST, shares of Nestle India were down 0.5% at 2,193 rupees on the National Stock Exchange.  End
