Only 6.68% of population filed income tax returns in FY24, says govt

NEW DELHI – Only 6.68% of the population filed income tax returns in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar), Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Parliament on Tuesday. In FY24, 80.90 million people filed income tax returns, Chaudhary said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
In assessment year 2023-24, 79.71 million returns were filed, higher than the 72.58 million returns filed in assessment year 2022-23, according to data provided by Chaudhary in his reply.
The number of individuals who filed returns but reported zero taxable income rose to 490,408 in assessment year 2023-24 from 464,290 a year ago. In assessment year 2021-22, 549,288 individuals declared zero taxable income in their returns. End
