MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave warning for several northern states for this week. It said cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail over a few pockets of west Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, and east Rajasthan.

According to the IMD, a "cold wave" is declared when the departure in minimum temperature from the normal is at the threshold of (-)5 degrees Celsius to (-)6 degrees Celsius, and the normal temperature is greater than or equal to 10 degrees Celsius. Similarly, a "severe cold wave" warning will be issued in the region when the minimum temperature departure from normal is at the threshold of (-)6 degrees Celsius to (-)10 degrees Celsius and the normal temperature is (-)7 degrees Celsius or lower.

Cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Telangana, west Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, and west Madhya Pradesh during the week.

Leaving east Uttar Pradesh, no significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over northwest India in the next three days, after which temperatures could rise gradually by 2 degrees Celsius. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over central and west India during the next 24 hours and thereafter a gradual rise by 3-5 degrees Celsius is expected. A rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius is likely over east Uttar Pradesh and east India during the next 2–4 days and no significant change thereafter, the IMD said.

Moving to southern India, the IMD said heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday and Wednesday due to a low pressure area formed over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal. The weather system is likely to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast during the next two days.

The weather bureau has advised fishermen not to venture into the southeast Arabian Sea and the Somalia coast on Monday and in the Gulf of Mannar till Thursday, and the south Bay of Bengal till Wednesday.  End
