NEW DELHI – Deposits under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana have risen to INR 2.38 trillion as of Nov. 20, the finance ministry Saturday said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The total number of accounts under the scheme as of Nov. 20 was 540.3 million, the ministry said.
The government in August 2014 introduced the scheme to promote financial inclusion. The scheme provides universal banking services for every unbanked household. It offers account holders multiple advantages, such as a bank account without the need to maintain a minimum balance, free-of-cost RuPay debit cards with inbuilt accident insurance of INR 200,000, and an overdraft facility of up to INR 10,000.
Of the total number of Jan Dhan accounts, 300.7 million were held by women and about 359.5 million accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, the ministry said. Over 369 million RuPay credit cards have also been issued under the scheme as of Nov. 20. End
