NEW DELHI – Around 280 companies have joined the first phase of the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Friday in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The scheme was announced in the Union Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and launched in October.
Sitharaman said the internship scheme has received online applications from over 740 districts across India. Among these, individuals from more than 570 districts have received internships, she added.
"The #PMInternshipScheme is a visionary initiative aimed at empowering and providing training to 1 crore (10 million) youth in the top 500 top companies over the next 5 years," Sitharaman said.
Informist had reported on Oct. 14 that over 155,000 candidates had registered on the Prime Minister Internship Scheme portal within 24 hours of it going live. Companies such as Reliance Industries Ltd., Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Eicher Motors Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., and Muthoot Finance Ltd. have posted internship openings on the portal, Informist had reported.
Under the scheme, internships will be provided in the country's top 500 companies. Those candidates selected for internships will get an allowance of INR 5,000 per month and a one-time assistance of INR 6,000. The companies will be expected to bear the cost of training and 10% of the internship cost from their corporate social responsibility funds, the finance minister had said in her Budget speech in July.
