MUMBAI – Wholesale domestic automobile despatches saw a minor dip in November even as exports jumped, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Friday. Total domestic automobile despatches declined 0.3% on year to 1.96 million units in November, while exports rose 24.5% to 446,867 units as utility vehicle sales to foreign markets increased 47%, the data showed.
"The demand momentum which was seen in October during the festive period has continued in November for the industry as a whole, although two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments witnessed minor de-growth," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said in a press release. Total production of automobiles in November rose 8.0% on year to 2.41 million units.
PASSENGER VEHICLES
Domestic passenger vehicle sales in November were the highest ever for November at 347,522 units, up 4.1% on year. Passenger car sales, which include micro, mini and compact models, in November were 97,186 units, down 5.2% on year, the data showed. Utility vehicles sold locally in November were 192,684 units, up 10.1% on year. Wholesale van despatches rose 3.5% on year to 10,589 units.
Domestic passenger vehicle sales in Apr-Nov were 2.73 million units, up 1.0% on year. Automobile companies exported 498,760 passenger vehicles in Apr-Nov, up 12.1% on year. A total of 3.19 million passenger vehicles were produced in Apr-Nov, up 2% on year, the data showed.
TWO-WHEELERS
Domestic sales of two-wheelers in November declined 1.1% on year to 1.60 million units. Scooter wholesales rose 11.7% on year to 568,580 units in November, while motorcycle wholesales declined 7.5% to 990,246 units. Companies sold 45,923 mopeds in November, up 5.6% on year, SIAM data showed.
Exports of two-wheelers surged 30.2% to 362,157 units in November, driven by robust demand for motorcyles and mopeds. Motorcyle exports rose 33.1% on year to 316,425 units, while moped exports jumped to 768 units from 36 units a year ago. Companies produced 1.98 million two-wheelers in November, up 8.8% on year, SIAM data showed.
Sales of two-wheelers in Apr-Nov rose 13.7% on year to 13.93 million. Exports of two-wheelers in the first eight months of the financial year increased 19.1% to 2.69 million units. Two-wheeler production in Apr-Nov was 16.51 million units, up 14.6% on year.
THREE-WHEELERS
In the domestic markets, 59,350 units of three-wheelers were despatched in November, down 1.3% on year. Wholesales of e-rickshaws in November were 1,527 units, down 40.4% on year. Passenger carriers sold in November were 47,725 units, largely unchanged from a year ago.
Exports of three-wheelers in November dipped 10.4% to 23,439 units in November, driven by a 36.7% on-year fall in exports of goods carriers. The production of three-wheelers in November fell 5.5% to 76,997 units. Production of e-rickshaws plummeted to 1,703 units from 2,942 a year ago.
Sales of three-wheelers in Apr-Nov increased 6.7% on year to 509,919 units, while exports fell 1.6% to 203,436 units. A total of 716,421 three-wheelers were manufactured in Apr-Nov, up 3.8% on year.
Quadricycles were not sold in India in November. However, companies exported 720 quadricyles in November, up 140% from a year ago. Companies manufactured 846 quadricylces in November, up 162% on year.
