MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu and an orange alert for Kerala on Friday due to heavy to very heavy rainfall. A red alert indicates rainfall of more than 204.4 mm, while an orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm in 24 hours.
The weather bureau said that heavy rainfall was also likely over Lakshadweep on Friday, and over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Tuesday. An upper air cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the south Andaman Sea on Saturday, after which it may become a low pressure area around Sunday, the weather agency said. It is likely to move west-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast in the next 48 hours, causing heavy to heavy rainfall till Wednesday.
In the last 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall with exceptionally heavy falls were reported over isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and coastal Andhra Pradesh, the weather department said.
Meanwhile, cold wave warnings have been issued due to likely severe cold wave conditions in some parts of Punjab till Sunday, it said. Cold wave conditions are also very likely in parts of Rajasthan, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand till Saturday, in Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh till Sunday, and in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad till Monday, the agency said. A cold day warning has been issued for some parts of Madhya Pradesh till Saturday, the weather department said.
The weather bureau has issued ground frost warnings in parts of Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab till Saturday.
No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over northwest and west India in the next two days, after which temperatures could rise gradually by two-three degrees Celsius, except in Gujarat.
