NEW DELHI - Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Friday after members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and opposition parties created ruckus in the House over a no-confidence motion against Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Opposition parties had submitted a notice for a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar on Tuesday.

The House witnessed a war of words between Dhankhar and Congress President and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, with the former saying he was the son of a farmer and wouldn't show any weakness.

"I will die for this country. You will not reflect and just wonder why a son of a farmer is sitting in this position. I am pained; I request you all to think... I have never hesitated in giving respect. Look at the gesturing... look at what you are saying. I have tolerated a lot. Today, a farmer is not just limited to the farms, farmers are working everywhere, they have government jobs, industries," Dhankhar said.

Kharge responded by saying, "If you are a son of a farmer, then I am the son of a labourer...You are saying that we are insulting a son of a farmer. I want to say that I am son of a labourer."

Referring to remarks by BJP members hailing the journey of the chairman, Kharge said, "We are not here to listen to your praises. The chairman who is not respecting me, how can I respect you? You are insulting me."

To this, Dhankhar said, "I know whose praise you want to hear."

BJP members termed the opposition parties anti-farmer, and said that the people of the country were hurt over the no-confidence motion. BJP leader Surendra Singh Nagar said the Opposition had shown its mentality against farmers.

Another BJP leader, Neeraj Sekhar, called the Congress anti-farmer and said the party wanted growth for only one family. "I don't understand what problem Congress has if the son of a farmer is sitting in such a prestigious post in Parliament. Opposition just wants one family to move forward in this life," Shekhar said.

Opposition members also claimed that while Dhankhar allowed BJP members to speak in his defence, opposition members weren't given the opportunity to speak in the house.

As the disruption continued from both sides, Dhankhar adjourned the proceedings till Monday.

In the three weeks of the Winter Session so far, the Upper House could transact business for only two days, with the rest of the session washed out due to uproar. The House is scheduled to take up a debate on the Constitution to mark the 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution. The session is scheduled to end on Dec. 20.  End
