NEW DELHI – Trinamool Congress lawmaker in the Rajya Sabha Sagarika Ghose Thursday submitted a privilege motion notice against Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju for allegedly insulting the opposition members. The notice, signed by around 60 members belonging to opposition parties, was submitted to the Rajya Sabha secretariat.
On Wednesday, Rijiju called the opposition members unworthy of sitting in the house while condemning the no-confidence motion notice moved by the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance against Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Rajya Sabha.
After giving the notice, Ghose told reporters that Rijiju chose to repeatedly insult the opposition instead of doing his best to run parliament smoothly. "Rijuju insulted the opposition by saying that the entire opposition was "not worthy" of being members of the House. Rijiju has insulted opposition members and used personal terms both inside and outside Parliament. This is totally unbecoming of the high office he holds and amounts to a brazen misuse of his position," Ghose said.
The opposition parties demanded an unqualified apology from the minister and sought expunging his remarks.
Rijiju on Wednesday condemned the opposition's move to submit a notice for the removal of Dhankhar. "After 72 years, a son of a farmer has become the vice president. Entire country is watching how the vice president preserved the dignity of the house. The opposition made baseless allegations against chairman. You (the opposition) have no right to be members of this house if you can’t respect the chairman. We will not let you succeed if you attack the chairman," Rijiju said.
On Tuesday, the I.N.D.I.A. members had submitted a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar, alleging that he conducted proceedings of the house in an extremely biased manner. The Opposition bloc moved the motion under Article 67(B) of the Constitution. The resolution to remove Dhankhar would likely be rejected in the upper house as the opposition parties lack the required numbers. The members, however, asserted that the motion was intended to send a strong message in defence of parliamentary democracy. End
