--IMD: India rainfall in week to Wednesday 44% below normal at 2.1 mm

MUMBAI – India received an average rainfall of 2.1 millimetre in the week ended Wednesday, 44% below the normal of 3.8 millimetre for the period, the India Meteorological Department said. All the four homogeneous regions in the country received below-normal rainfall during the week, the weather bureau said.

South peninsular India received 22% below-normal rainfall during the week at 7.9 millimetre. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal received 78% rainfall at 5.6 millimetre, while Kerala and Mahe got 30% lower showers at 7.4 millimetre.

Northwest India recorded 0.2 millimetre of rain, 93% lower than the normal rainfall for the period, the data showed. Rainfall in east and northeast India was down 48% during the week at 1.6 millimetre. Similarly, central India received 48% below-normal rainfall at 0.8 millimetre during the week, the agency said.

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was 'normal' in eight, 'excess' in one, and 'large excess' in four during the week. Rainfall was 'large deficient' in nine subdivisions and 'deficient' in seven, while seven subdivisions received no rain at all during the week.

Since Oct. 1, India has received 99.7 millimetre of rainfall, 10% below the normal of 110.7 millimetre for the period. End
