--Lok Sabha adjourned for the day amid din

NEW DELHI – The Lok Sabha adjourned for the day following an uproar over remarks made by Trinamool Congress lawmaker Kalyan Banerjee against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Chaos erupted in the house when Banerjee, while speaking on the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, alleged inadequate response from the government to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was countered by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi successfully handled the crisis by taking everyone along. Scindia spoke in support of Rai stating that India emerged as Vishwa Bandhu during the pandemic and helped all the needy countries.

Following this, Banerjee made certain remarks against Scindia which were later expunged by Speaker Om Birla. The verbal spat between the ruling party and opposition members led to multiple adjournments. The house was adjourned for the day shortly after it reconvened at 1700 IST.

Unlike the Rajya Sabha which was adjourned for the day without transacting any business, the Lok Sabha passed the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024, to repeal the Indian Railway Board Act, 1905, and also took up the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024 for discussion. The lower house also held question hour.

Earlier in the day, the Congress had urged Birla to examine the party's complaints about "defamatory remarks" by BJP member Nishikant Dubey against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The party requested the speaker to expunge Dubey's remarks and said that it was keen to participate in the parliamentary proceedings. According to a Congress member, Speaker Birla did not give any assurance to the party.

In the Rajya Sabha, the proceedings were marred after members of opposition parties and the ruling side traded charges over a no-trust notice moved by opposition members against Vice-President and chairperson of the House Jagdeep Dhankhar. Accusing Dhankhar of bias and not protecting the opposition, the Congress-led opposition moved a no-trust notice, seeking to remove Dhankhar as chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Sixty members of Parliament have signed the notice. End
