IMD sees very heavy rainfall over south India till Thursday

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Wednesday said southern India is likely to receive very heavy rainfall till Thursday due to a well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the coast of Sri Lanka. The weather bureau has issued an orange alert in Tamil Nadu till Thursday due to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm in 24 hours.   

 

During the next 24 hours, the well-marked low pressure area is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu, the department said. This is likely to lead to heavy rain over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. The weather bureau has advised fishermen not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and the southwest Bay of Bengal till Thursday.  

 

Meanwhile, Rajasthan is likely to see severe cold wave conditions Wednesday, and cold wave conditions till Monday. A cold day warning has been issued for both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.

 

Dense fog conditions are very likely during late night or early morning hours in isolated pockets of West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the week, the department said. 

 

A gradual fall of 2-3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures is likely over east India during the next two days, and no significant change is seen thereafter, the department said. A gradual fall of 2-3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures is likely over west India during the next two-three days.  End
