NEW DELHI - The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after Bharatiya Janata Party members raised slogans and protested against the move of the Opposition parties to submit a notice for the removal of Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. As the house commenced proceedings on Wednesday, members of the BJP and Opposition parties resorted to sloganeering over the issue of no-confidence motion and alleged links between the Congress party and George Soros.

The BJP members demanded discussion on alleged links between billionaire George Soros and the Congress party. Soon, the Opposition members also resorted to sloganeering, demanding discussion on allegations of fraud and bribery against industrialist Gautam Adani and his indictment in the US.

Amid the chaos, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and BJP President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda, who were allowed by the chair to speak, condemned the Opposition's move to bring a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar. Rijiju asserted that the ruling party has full faith in the chairman. He said the Opposition has made baseless allegations against the chairman.

"After 72 years, a son of a farmer has become the vice president. The entire country is watching how the vice president preserves the dignity of the house. The Opposition made baseless allegations against chairman. You (the Opposition) have no right to be a member of this house. We will not let you succeed if you attack the chairman," Rijiju said.

Nadda alleged that the Opposition parties had moved the motion to deviate attention from alleged links between senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and billionaire George Soros. "For the last two days, our people have been raising the issue that what the relationship is between Soros and Sonia Gandhi. This is a question of the sovereignty of the country. The relation between Soros and the Congress party should be discussed. It is a matter of security of the country," Nadda said.

The Rajya Sabha was first adjourned till 1200 IST. When the house reconvened, it was adjourned for the day within 10 minutes as the disruptions continued from both sides.

On Tuesday, members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance submitted a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar alleging that he conducted proceedings of the house in an extremely biased manner.

The Opposition bloc moved the motion under Article 67(B) of the Constitution. The article states that a vice-president may be removed from his office by a resolution of the Council of States passed by a majority of all the then members of the council and agreed to by the House of the People. It also states that the resolution can only be moved after at least 14 days' notice has been given of the intention to move the resolution. The motion is unlikely to be taken up for discussion and voting as the session ends in less than 14 days. The Winter Session is scheduled to end on Dec. 20.

Earlier, the Opposition had planned to bring a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar during the Budget-cum-Monsoon session this year but could not go ahead as the session ended.

On Tuesday, Rijiju, while responding to the no-trust motion, said that the government has a majority in the upper house and the majority has faith in the chairman.

The Lok Sabha was also adjourned till 1400 IST on Wednesday amid uproar over the issue of alleged links between Congress and Soros-backed organisations.

As Congress member Gaurav Gogoi, while raising the Manipur unrest issue in Lok Sabha, alleged that BJP members were raising the Soros issue to "hide their failures", Union Minister Piyush Goyal responded saying the Manipur situation is being tackled "at the highest level". As the commotion peaked with both sides charging each other, the Chair adjourned the House till 1400 IST.  End
