NEW DELHI – The government has given additional charge of the post of revenue secretary to Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth with immediate effect "till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier", the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet said Tuesday. Seth has been given the additional charge after Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra was named the next governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

Malhotra will take over Wednesday as the 26th governor of the central bank. Incumbent Shaktikanta Das's term ends Tuesday. In his final press conference as the RBI governor Tuesday, Das expressed confidence that Malhotra would "do his best".

Earlier in the day, responding to queries from the media, Malhotra said he would first like to join the RBI and understand the turf before commenting on what he aims to do as governor of the central bank. However, he said he hopes to continue doing what is best for the Indian economy.

Seth has been assigned the additional charge with less than two months to go before Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) in February. Seth is an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1987 batch from the Karnataka cadre and has been the economic affairs secretary since April 2021.  End
