Bill aiming to repeal Merchant Shipping Act 1958 introduced in Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI – The government on Tuesday introduced in the Lok Sabha a Bill that aims to repeal the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, to provide for contemporaneous, futuristic, and dynamic legislation, notwithstanding the unabated ruckus and sloganeering by Opposition members.
"The merchant shipping industry has experienced significant changes internationally in recent years, presenting various challenges to Indian shipping. To address these challenges and promote ease of doing business, reforms in the 1958 Act became essential," said Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal in the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill.
The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, aims to consolidate and amend the law relating to merchant shipping to ensure compliance with India's obligations under the maritime treaties and international instruments to which India is a party and also to ensure the development of Indian shipping and efficient maintenance of the Indian mercantile marine in a manner best suited to serve the national interest.
The Bill, approved by the Union Cabinet in early November, further aims to meet India's requirements as an emerging economy by reducing compliance burden, boosting tonnage, enhancing seafarer welfare, maritime safety, preventing marine pollution, implementing India's international obligations, and promoting transparency and ease of business.
