NEW DELHI – Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das, who will demit office later in the day, conveyed his best wishes to his successor Sanjay Malhotra. In his final press conference as the RBI governor on Tuesday, he expressed confidence that the 26th governor of the Indian central bank "will do his best".

"I would like to take this opportunity to convey my best wishes to the incoming (RBI) governor Sanjay Malhotra, a person with a very wide-ranging experience, and I am sure he will do his best," Das said. The government Monday appointed Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the next RBI governor for a three-year term starting Wednesday, with Das' tenure ending Tuesday. Das has served as the RBI governor since 2018.

Das said restoring the inflation-growth balance is the most important task ahead for the RBI, and he is confident that the central bank staff under the leadership of the new governor "will take it forward".

Earlier in the day, while responding to queries from the media, Malhotra said he would first like to join the RBI and understand the turf before commenting on what he aims to do as the newly appointed governor of the central bank. However, the bureaucrat said he hopes to continue doing what is best for the Indian economy.

Asked if he would like to like any advice to the incoming RBI governor, Das said that "what advice I give to Sanjay Malhotra, should he ask me, is between him and I".  End
