NEW DELHI – Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday raised concern over the safety of minorities and attacks on religious, cultural and diplomatic properties in Bangladesh, during his meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Touhid Hossain, the ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. Misri was in Dhaka on an official visit amid strained ties between the two countries in the aftermath of Sheikh Hasina's ouster in August. Hasina is now in exile in India. An interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is currently in charge in Dhaka. Misri also called on the interim government's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, the External Affairs ministry said.

During the meetings, Misri highlighted "India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh". He reiterated India's willingness to build a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, based on mutual trust and respect and mutual sensitivity to each other's concern and interests, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

"...we also had the opportunity to discuss certain recent developments and issues, and I conveyed our concerns, including those related to the safety and welfare of minorities," Misri said told the media. "We also discussed some regrettable incidents of attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties. We expect, overall, a constructive approach on all these issues by the Bangladesh authorities, and we look forward to moving the relationship forward in a positive, forward-looking, and constructive direction."

Bangladesh has witnessed violent agitations following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, known for advocating the rights of religious minorities. Das is a monk of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, who has been held on charges of sedition. A lawyer was killed outside a court in Chittagong by a mob and more than 20 people were injured in clashes Nov. 26. Das had reportedly organised several protests to draw attention to the alleged atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted. Several incidents of attacks on members of minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh after her ouster.
