India Apr-Nov major ports' freight traffic up 2.59% YoY

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India in Apr-Nov 2024 rose 2.59% on year to 549.47 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.
This rise was mainly led by the minor uptrend in crude and petroleum products cargo, which accounts for nearly one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports across the country. In Apr-Nov 2024, the crude and petroleum products cargo rose 1.22% on year to 162.69 million tonnes.
Other than crude oil, container traffic saw a 3.78% increase in tonnage to 125.39 million tonnes, and thermal coal cargo's volume for Apr-Nov rose 0.55% on year to 85.16 million tonnes.
The miscellaneous traffic for Apr-Nov, 2024, was up 24.70% on year at 70.52 million tonnes.
The increase in cargo handled in Apr-Nov was under pressure due to lower coking coal volumes, which fell 8.21% on year to 38.75 million tonnes. The volume of iron ore cargo was down 13.05% on year at 32.39 million tonnes, finished fertilisers cargo was down 16.74% on year at 5.2 million tonnes and that of raw fertilisers was up 10.28% on year at 6.73 million tonnes.
Among the specific ports, Paradip handled the highest traffic in Apr-Nov at 96.68 million tonnes, followed closely by Deendayal port at 95.7 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 60.05 million tonnes.
