NEW DELHI – The government is likely to extend monitoring of import of laptops, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers by another year till December 2025, a senior government official said. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade, which is monitoring the import of these electronic goods, had recently extended the policy till Dec. 31, 2024.

Since November 2023, the government has allowed the import of these electronic gadgets through a permit system, under which the DGFT issues authorisation through an import management system that specifies the quantity and value of imports, which allows the government to monitor real-time imports.

With the extension, importers will continue to need authorisation to import laptops, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers till December 2025, the official told Informist. There were security concerns, but the main motive behind enabling the import monitoring system was to gauge import dependency and encourage domestic manufacturing accordingly, the official said.

Though the government had initially announced restrictions on import of laptops, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers, it resorted to just monitoring after a backlash from the US.

"The government wants to monitor the import of the products for a longer period of time to collect more data," the official said. Accordingly, the government would announce measures to boost domestic manufacturing, the official added.

There are two production-linked incentive schemes operational in the electronics sector for large-scale electronic goods and information technology hardware with a total outlay of INR 556.45 billion. In fact, the PLI scheme has been the most successful for the large-scale electronics manufacturing sector. The government has released over INR 50 billion under the PLI scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing.

India's electronic goods exports jumped 23.6% to $29.12 billion in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar). The import of these goods stood at $89.67 billion during FY24, up 16.05%.  End
