MUMBAI – Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said Friday that a low pressure area is likely to form over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal around Saturday.

By Thursday, the low pressure area is likely to move west-northwestwards and reach over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast. Under its influence, heavy showers are expected over parts of coastal Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and Thursday. Similar weather conditions are expected over Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Yanam on Thursday.

The weather department also sees a fresh western disturbance likely affecting the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India from Sunday. The weather system is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over the western Himalayan region. This weather system is also likely to cause light rainfall over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and west Uttar Pradesh on Sunday and Monday.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau sees cold wave conditions very likely to prevail over pockets of northern Rajasthan during Tue-Thu. It added there is likely to impact agriculture, crop, livestock, water supply, transport, and the power sector at some places.

Dense fog conditions are likely to prevail over pockets of seven sisters -- Sikkim, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh next week.

A gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degree Celsius is very likely over east India during the next five days and a 3-5 degree Celsius dip in minimum temperatures is likely over west India during the next five days, the IMD said.  End
