NEW DELHI - The Lok Sabha was on Friday adjourned for the day after Congress-led Opposition members vociferously protested Bharatiya Janata Party member Nishikant Dubey's allegation of "Congress ka haath Soros ke saath".

Questioning what he alleged were the Congress' ties with people associated with the Soros Foundation and foreign nationals who have criticised India, Dubey sought to know if the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, had links with foreign forces trying to "derail" India's growth trajectory.

Proceedings in the Lower House were earlier adjourned till 1200 IST amid din over Opposition members' protests on the issue of linking the Congress and Rahul Gandhi with US-based billionaire investor George Soros. Sloganeering from the Opposition side persisted in the House even after it reassembled at 1200 IST.

In a post on X, the BJP said "Imported agenda, local delivery! RaGa-Soros Ek Hain!"

The BJP has targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for having links with US billionaire George Soros and being part of a plan to "derail" India's economy and "disrupt" its democracy. Soros Foundation is a US-based grant-making network founded by US business magnate George Soros.

In a lecture in Germany early last year, George Soros had asserted that the controversy surrounding Indian industrialist Gautam Adani's business empire might damage PM Modi's "stranglehold on India's national government and provide a platform for promoting urgent institutional reforms. I could be foolish, but I think democracy will flourish again in India."

Soros' speech at the Munich Security Conference drew sharp reactions from Indian officials, with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar dubbing the US billionaire Soros as a "dangerous" person who was "scaremongering".

In the Lok Sabha on Friday, Congress member Hibi Eden submitted a notice to move a privilege motion against BJP member Sambit Patra for his remarks calling Rahul Gandhi "a traitor of the highest order". In his letter to Speaker Om Birla, Eden said, "I wish to raise a motion of privilege and bring to your attention the completely unparliamentary conduct of Sambit Patra, MP of Lok Sabha, against the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi."  End
