MUMBAI – Water levels in 155 key reservoirs in the country fell to 145.416 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, from 147.943 billion cubic metres on Nov. 28, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 80% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres.

However, the water level as of Thursday was up 25% from the same period last year and 17% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. The normal storage is the average storage for the preceding 10 years.

The total live storage capacity fell in all regions across the country except in the eastern region, where it remained the same as last week. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.908 billion cubic metres, which was 72% of the total live storage capacity, against 70% in the corresponding period last year.

Water levels in the western region were 34.138 billion cubic metres, which is 91% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in this region. During the same period last year, the water levels were 79% of the total live storage capacity.

Further, eight of the 50 reservoirs were full and 18 were at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. There were no reservoirs in the western region with water below 40% of the storage capacity.

The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa, which has received excess to "large excess" rainfall so far during the northeast monsoon season that commenced on Oct. 1.

In the northern region, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in reservoirs was 11.026 billion cubic metres, 56% of the total live storage capacity against 69% a year ago.

In the central region, the water level in reservoirs was 40.052 billion cubic metres, which was 83% of the total live storage capacity compared to 74% in the previous year.

The water levels in the southern region fell to 45.292 billion cubic metres, 83% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in this region, the data showed. The water levels in the region during the same period last year were just 42% of the total live storage capacity.

In the southern region, 10 reservoirs had water above 91% of the total storage capacity with six reservoirs full, the data showed. There were four reservoirs in the southern region with water at 40% and below the storage capacity or less.

Of the 155 reservoirs, 139 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 16 reported storage at 80% or lower of the live capacity. Out of these 16 reservoirs, only one has water storage of up to 50% of normal storage.

Since Oct. 1, the country has received 9% below normal rainfall at 98.2 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
